Hypermobility

What is hypermobility?

Hypermobility is essentially the body not using itself efficiently. It’s a condition that allows your joints and muscles to move and flex beyond what’s considered normal. Sometimes, this causes pain throughout the body and other long-term health consequences.

Hypermobility is a common symptom of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition that results in a defect in the body’s collagen, a critical protein that’s present in connective tissue, skin, and other systems of the body.

Does hypermobility or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome need treatment?

In many cases, people may not even be aware they have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or hypermobility, which makes it seem rare but may be more prevalent than research shows. If you are struggling with symptoms of unexplained fatigue, have experienced joint dislocation or hyperextension multiple times, or have an immediate family member with the condition, you may benefit from an expert’s evaluation.

Treating hypermobility is a simple but highly personalized plan of action to prevent more serious health conditions from developing in the future. We will work with you to teach your body to move in more sustainable ways through daily life to prevent injuries without disrupting your lifestyle.

What to look for in a hypermobility physical therapist

Physical therapy offers natural, highly successful treatment plans for people with hypermobility or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. However, not all physical therapists are hypermobility specialists.

At Peak Performance in Garner, we have a mobility specialist who has taken multiple courses in hypermobility, making them authorities in the Research Triangle area for clinical treatment of the condition. What’s more, our team always treats patients as individuals, not with a one-size-fits-all plan. We’ll consider your whole health profile, from cardiovascular fitness to coordination and balance, to make sure we create a totally tailored approach to your experience of hypermobility.

We understand that some people who have tried physical therapy for hypermobility came away from the experience feeling worse than before. Sadly, this does happen, usually because well-meaning PTs treat the condition from the perspective of a single body part. Peak Performance understands the whole-body approach to hypermobility, which allows us to make real, lasting progress, rather than cause the condition to feel worse.
